Sadly, there is no Hall of Fame for the mastery of salty language. If there were, then former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson would have his own wing.

Iron Mike has always been more than just a fighter, a rapist or an ear cannibal. He is crazygonuts. Out of his mind. Batsh*t.

Here’s a clip that is generously titled “Mike Tyson Funny Interviews.” A better title might be “Mike Tyson Describes Prison Love.” What follows is not fit for any workplace, except possibly for some of the NSFW penitentiaries in which Tyson has bunked.

Profanity-laced tirades by minor league managers are always great. They’re even better when the skipper is wearing a microphone.

We now travel back a couple of years to check out Wally Backman, the former New York Mets second baseman. He’s managing the South Georgia Peanuts. One of his players has been ejected, and he’s not happy. What follows is a lot of NSFW language, some thrown bats and balls, and at least one torn fingernail.

Sometimes, during the creation of great profanity art, it’s actually the safe-for-work words that make the most lasting impression.

Such was the case when New Jersey Devils coach Jim Schoenfeld got into a heated argument with NHL referee Don Koharski after Game 3 of the 1988 Wales Conference finals. The Boston Bruins had just beaten Schoenfeld’s squad, and he was not amused.

It’s not certain whether Schoenfeld knocked down Koharski, or if he fell of his own accord. It all became moot after the coach suggested the “fat pig” help himself to a delicious pastry … and made putdown history.

Tommy Lasorda enjoyed a 21-year Hall of Fame career as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Some would say his greatest moment came when the Dodgers beat the New York Yankees in the 1981 World Series. Others would point to the Dodgers’ upset of the Oakland A’s in the ’88 Series.

And they would all be wrong.

Lasorda’s greatest achievement came in 1984, when he launched into this historic tirade about San Diego journeyman Kurt Bevacqua, who made the mistake of suggesting that Tommy ordered his pitchers to throw at Padres hitters.

It’s a Cooperstown-worthy stew filled with anger, humor … and a whole lot of not-safe-for-work adjectives:

Some of our profanity salutes need a little explanation or setup. Not this one. Here’s an entertaining montage of NBA stars using bad language. Of special note is the Latrell Sprewell appearance at the 2:50 mark, a refrain that helped him lock up the 2004 Loop Man of the Year Award:

It’s Wimbledon season again, and tennis fans will be glued to the tube to watch stars such as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal grace the hallowed grass courts with their talent and gentlemanly behavior.

Oh, how we miss the days of John McEnroe, who delighted … well … he delighted US with his legendary combination of profanity, shrieking and racket abusing. Here is a fun compilation, from his “You Cannot Be Serious” early years all the way to his glorious run on the senior tour:

Today, we mostly hear from Johnny only in the broadcasters booth. But he still occasionally likes to get out on the court and abuse officials. Here’s a clip from a recent event at the Tennis Hall of Fame that proves that, at the age of 51, he still has the manners of a 3-year-old.

March is a time of great madness in the college basketball world. But great tumult … and profanity … is not limited to tournament time.

Here’s a classic from 1994. It’s Temple coach John Chaney and then-Massachusetts mentor John Calipari, ready to throw down the gloves. This clip serves as a reminder that hated of the slick Calipari is not a new phenomenon.

While profanity often erupts amid madness and chaos, it isn’t limited to the bad times. Foul words can often ensue in times of joy and happiness, or times of great success.

One such incident came in 2007, when Kansas punt returner Raimond Pendleton took one to the house in the season opener against Central Michigan. To put it mildly, Jayhawks coach Mark Mangino was not pleased with his hot-dogging.

Here’s an oldie but a goodie that is approaching the 1 million mark on YouTube: Chris Berman’s commercial break meltdown during the 2000 season of ABC’s “Monday Night Football.”

Mr. ESPN got all hot and bothered because of some off-camera distractions. He could … go … all … the … way … to hurling F-bombs and taking the Lord’s name in vain.

Luckily, by the end of the clip, Berman is pretty much back, back, back to his old self.

Few people have dabbled in profanity more successfully than David Mamet, the Pulitzer Prize winning playwright. And no Mamet work is more chock full of Grade A expletives than his 1982 play “Glengarry Glen Ross.”

While the 1992 film version of “Glengarry” is very entertaining in its full 101 minutes, it’s even more of a treat when boiled down to just a few minutes of curse words.
